When we found out we had another baby coming soon, we knew we needed to be thinking ahead for our son and where he will be sleeping once it was time to move her to his crib. We figured now is the perfect time to transfer our son to a toddler bed and for us to make his room Montessori.
We found a steal on marketplace, a wooden toddler bed and mattress for $25. It had some wear and tear but we excited at the possiblity of refinishing it.

The first step was stripping it, we used CitriStrip and let it sit for an hour, scrapping off as much as we could to start. It didn’t take much off honestly, but what it did take off helped for less of the satin to rub off on the sandpaper when sanding.

Sanding is the most effective way we found to strip wood back to its original color. We used this sander with 80 grit sandpaper to get down to the original wood. For the corners, you’ll have to use the sandpaper by hand.
We wanted to go with a bleached wood look, so after sanding it down, we used white finishing wax to seal it. Regular wax was going to give the bed a yellowish look again but the white wax draws out the grain more and gives it the bleach look.
Here is the finished product. I think he is a big fan of his bed!
